Safest Cars for 2018 Announced — Subaru Leads the Pack

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performs annual crash tests on new vehicles entering the US market. They issue a rating system with “Top Safety Pick +” being the top award and “Top Safety Pick” just below that to characterize the crash safety performance of the various manufacturers and models. Subaru was awarded four Top Safety Pick + ratings for its vehicles.

The tests encompass a wide range of crash scenarios to create a realistic image of crash protection:

  • Front crash protection
  • Driver-side small overlap crash
  • Side crash
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints
  • Headlight tests
  • Passenger-side small overlap crash (a new test)

The newest test, a passenger-side small overlap crash test, was developed when the IIHS realized that some manufacturers were paying less attention to the front passenger side than the driver side when meeting crash protection standards. The newer headlight tests were also developed to determine how well a model illuminates the road ahead and the amount of glare their headlights create as a result.

The following Subaru models earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick + rating:

Small Car — Subaru Impreza and WRX

Midsize Car — Subaru Legacy and Outback
